SUE Engineering Technician

Utility Mapping Services, P.C. (UMS) is seeking a detail-oriented Engineering Technician located in or near Denver to help process Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) projects using Autodesk Civil 3D. This position focuses on processing field-collected utility data utilizing various GIS and CAD software to develop accurate CAD reference files used for engineering design, conflict analysis, utility coordination, and construction planning.
This position will work under the supervision of a licensed P.E. and closely with engineers, surveyors, and field technicians. The role involves interpreting a variety of data sources and translating them into organized and accurate digital models primarily working in Autodesk Civil 3D and related software, as well as various other programs to produce deliverables to our clients.
This role is ideal for individuals interested in civil engineering projects, utility infrastructure systems, and emerging digital engineering workflows.
Primary Responsibilities:
Process and organize field-collected utility investigation data utilizing Autodesk Civil 3D
Develop and maintain CAD drawings and reference files used for engineering design and construction coordination
Collect record information from utility owners in preparation for field efforts
Interpret survey data, utility records, and geophysical investigation results to accurately map underground infrastructure
Maintain organized digital project records
Ensure drafting standards and quality control procedures are followed
Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and field personnel to ensure accurate and timely project delivery
Assist with continual development and optimization of internal workflows related to digital mapping, modeling, and data management
Receive training in field operations and assist with field methods used for data collection
Preferred Technical Exposure:
Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) – ASCE 38-22 Guidelines
Autodesk AutoCAD / Civil 3D (primary platform)
QGIS or other GIS platforms
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
Pipe and Cable Utility Designating Equipment
GNSS survey equipment (Trimble)
Use of cloud-based storage systems (e.g. Box.com, Dropbox, ProjectWise, etc)
Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams)
Bentley OpenRoads Designer (ORD)
LiDAR scanning
Time Domain Electromagnetic Method (TDEM)
Frequency Domain Electromagnetic Method (FDEM)

General Requirements:
Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
Ability to work with computers and technical software tools daily
Basic typing proficiency (approximately 30 words per minute)
Work Environment:
UMS maintains offices and performs services throughout the United States. This position will be based in the Denver, Colorado office. UMS may offer hybrid or remote work options; however, successful candidates need to be within commuting distance to the Denver office.
Standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
Compensation:
$60,000 - $80,000 annually
Compensation may be adjusted and will be based on experience, qualifications, and demonstrated technical ability.
